Wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.) resistance to tribenuron methyl in wheat fields of Diyarbakır province, Türkiye

Abstract

In areas where weeds cause problems in wheat cultivation, chemical control is unavoidable. However, resistance problems in weeds arise from years of using herbicides with the same mode of action. If this problem is not recognized, application errors can occur, such as applying more than one herbicide in the same season or increasing the herbicide dose, further spiraling the problems. This situation paves the way for a number of environmental and health problems as well as economic and labor losses. Growers report that tribenuron-methyl, commonly used to control wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis), which is causing problems in the wheat fields of Diyarbakır province, is ineffective. To determine the extent of these reports, 56 wild mustard seed populations were collected from wheat growing areas in 16 districts of Diyarbakır. As a result of applications carried out with the classical test method under controlled conditions, resistance was suspected in the population of 28 fields. As a result of the dose-response experiments conducted with new generation seeds (F2), it was determined that a total of 9 wild mustard biotypes in 5 districts, namely Sur, Çınar, Bismil, Çermik and Yenişehir, developed resistance to tribenuron-methyl at 2-6 RI levels.
