WiFiSiM: An Educational Tool for the Study and Design of Wireless Networks

Abstract: A new educational simulation tool designed for the generic study of wireless networks, the Wireless Fidelity Simulator (WiFiSim), is presented in this paper. The goal of this work was to create and implement a didactic tool to improve the teaching and learning of computer networks by means of two complementary strategies: simulating the behavior and performance of communication protocols based on the IEEE 802.11 standard widely studied in networking courses, and providing with improved scope and realism for st… Show more

“…It 71 uses Java to simulate Texas Instruments MSP430 series microcontroller and display a visual representation of the whole sensor board. Wireless Fidelity Simulator (WiFiSim) is developed to enhance students' learning in the study of the wireless local area networks (WLANs) (Sanguino, Lopez, & Hernandez 2013). It is designed with the Eclipse framework, and its graphic user interface (GUI) was developed using Java Swing.…”

“…Although there are many programs available today in the market, they support only a limited number of commands and most of these commands cannot be realized authentically. It can be said that such simulation programs are good tools to gain some knowledge about theoretical and applied aspects . But they are mostly designed to carry out some commands or simulate specific mechanisms, so they are far from simulating the real hardware (such as Boson Router Simulator and Cisco Packet Tracer) in a real sense.…”

“…For instance, color has been used to code components of circuit boards [30] and telecommunication systems [31]. Color has also been used to represent concept maps [32], singularities in robot movements [33], and terms in digital logic expressions on a K-map [34] as well as frames and phases in communications protocols [35], [36]. However, these prior studies did not specifically examine electrical circuit analysis instruction, nor did they examine the impact of color coding on learning.…”
