Geo chem i cal stud ies of Pøídolí tuffites from the Ma³opolska Block, an Emsian tuffite from the £ysogóry Block in the Holy Cross Fold Belt and a Pøídolí tuffite from the Bardo Unit in the Cen tral Sudetes in di cate that they were formed in a sim i lar tec tonic set ting re lated to post-orogenic, con ti nen tal arc-back-arc magmatism, de vel oped along the south ern mar gin of Laurussia, cor re lated with the Rhenohercynian Zone. In terms of their geo chem i cal pat tern, the tuffites are sim i lar to the up per Si lu rian-Lower De vo nian ig ne ous rocks in Ger many, Ukraine (Podolia) and Moldova, which were prob a bly formed along the same subduction zone, dur ing an early stage of the con ti nental arc-back-arc mag matic ac tiv ity.

“…Palaeontological findings with the collection of Permian, Triassic and Jurassic reptile footprints from geosites such as Sołtyków, Wióry, Baranów and Kopulak, as well as geological collections, Since the Romanesque period, several stonework centres connected with the Triassic and Jurassic sandstones were developed along the Kamienna River, especially in Kunów, Wąchock (Fig. 5), Doły Biskupie and Nietulisko, which became the main source of stone for local and regional architecture, as well as for stately buildings in the capital city (Urban, Gągol 1994, Gałka 2014, Fijałkowska-Mader et al 2022. In order to commemorate the 700-year tradition of stonemasonry in Kunów, local authorities are planning to build Kunów Land Museum in the old granary building.…”

The development of geotourism in the Holy Cross Mountains region has a long tradition based on the scientific and educational geological values of this area. In order to evaluate geotourism resources and their development in three representative areas of Świętokrzyskie voivodeship – the Holy Cross Mountains UNESCO Global Geopark (GGp), the central part of the Holy Cross Mountains and the Kamienna River Valley – a review of the literature and statistical data, and field studies of geosites and educational units were carried out. The Holy Cross Mountains UNESCO GGp is a first-rate geotourism region, which plays a leading role in geotourism and geoeducation, promoting geological values and infrastructure development. The central part of the Holy Cross Mountains and the Kamienna River Valley are classified as second-rate regions. The remaining areas of Świętokrzyskie voivodeship, with its unique geodiversity and biodiversity, are still waiting for their geological attractions to be discovered and shared with the broader public.

The properties of reservoir water in post-mining excavations of Cambrian and Devonian quartzite sandstones (Holy Cross Mountains)

In the Holy Cross Mountains (southern Poland), there are numerous disused quarries. Some of these are filled with water, and some, despite their nearby location, have extremely diverse physicochemical and chemical properties of their waters. One such object is the Wiśniówka Mała reservoir. Its waters contain large amounts of sulfates (> 700 mg/L) and iron (24 mg/L), which are weathering products of rocks containing metal sulfides (mainly pyrite) in the direct drainage zone. As a consequence, there is an increase in the electrolytic conductivity of the water supplying the reservoir, resulting in very low pH values (< 4). This article presents the detailed limnological characteristics of this reservoir and explains the process that led to its water acidification. A control reservoir, Barcza, was also selected for the tests. Although it is also a post-mining excavation, it has a neutral pH and a low concentration of sulfates and iron. The examined reservoirs differ in the hydrochemical type of waters. The Wiśniówka Mała reservoir represents a sulfate-calcium double-ion type (SO 4 2−-Ca 2+) and the Barcza reservoir, a bicarbonate-calcium type (HCO 3 −-Ca 2+). The concentrations of the main ions occurring here are shaped by the lithological features of the surrounding rocks (respectively: Upper Cambrian quartzite sandstones with pyrite mineralization zones, Lower Devonian sandstones cut by mudstones and claystones with tuffite inserts).
