Yet, in an earlier book she coedited with Richard Beach (1984), Bridwell argued for a new model of writing research on the grounds "that we cannot isolate writing from the social, political, and psychological context in which it occurs" (6). Reservations notwithstanding, however, Freedman has assembled a useful collection of essays on response and revision, for each contributes substantially to how we might study what writers know and how they deploy their social and cognitive knowledge in the course of writing.
