Widespread late Cenozoic increase in erosion rates across the interior of eastern Tibet constrained by detrital low‐temperature thermochronometry

Abstract: [1] New detrital low-temperature thermochronometry provides estimates of long-term erosion rates and the timing of initiation of river incision from across the interior of the Tibetan Plateau. We use the erosion history of this region to evaluate proposed models of orogenic development as well as regional climatic events. “…This value is comparable to the measured incision rates (10-90 m. Myr -1 ) by cosmogenic 26 Al dating of the Wudingshan caves (with burial ages of 2.54 and 0.69 Ma) in close proximity of the northern end of the Red River (Schoenbohm, 2004b). The incision rate estimated from sites B-D, however, are much lower than those obtained from the Nanpie River and other deeply incised rivers over the Yunnan Plateau (Allen et al, 1984;Kirby et al, 2003;Clark et al, 2005;Ouimet et al, 2010;Godard et al, 2010;Duvall et al, 2012;Hetzel, 2013), implying distinct drainage incision in different time periods, likely due to changes in climatic conditions or staged tectonic uplift of the plateau (Schoenbohm et al, 2004a). Aliquots of two grams were taken from each sample, dissolved in concentrated HF/HNO 3 and analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) measurements for 27 Al and other elements to assure purity. “…Because externally drained rivers provide an erosive mechanism to destroy uplifted terrane, understanding why these rivers have not incised further and more deeply into the Tibetan plateau is essential to decipher how the plateau grew. Recent research in the eastern (7,8) and northern (9) Tibetan plateau indicates that erosion rates have increased significantly since ∼10 Ma. These increases suggest that rock uplift rates have also increased and that the plateau has expanded to the east and north during this time [due to lower crustal flow (7) or upper crustal extrusion (8) to the east and structural reorganization to the north (9)], causing rivers to steepen and erode at faster rates.…”
