Widespread Detection of Phytophthora Taxon Salixsoil in the Littoral Zone of Lake Constance, Germany

Abstract: An unnamed ITS clade 6 Phytophthora was frequently isolated from rhizosphere soil of reed (Phragmites australis) growing on the littoral zone of Lake Constance. The isolates closely resembled P. gonapodyides, having internally proliferating, non-papillate sporangia, a rather high temperature optimum for growth (30°C), and being sexually sterile. ITS sequence analysis revealed that they were identical to the as yet unnamed Phytophthora taxon Salixsoil, originally isolated from Salix roots in the UK and Alnus de… Show more

“…These species are found in Europe, North America and Australia (Brasier et al 2003, Reeser et al 2011, Stukely 2012. Both appear to be strongly associated with aquatic habitats where they are thought to exist as saprotrophs on plant debris (Brasier et al 2003, Nechwatal andMendgen 2006). However, they also infect living plants, such as Salix spp.…”

“…1). The isolates were identified to species based on PCR amplification with the species-specific primers [5]. On the basis of the growth rate and colony morphology observed on the PDA medium they were divided into 10 groups.…”

“…It has been increasingly isolated from the rhizosphere, soil, and water [4]. Especially the separation of this taxon from similar P. gonapodyides has resulted in an avalanche of reports about its mass isolation from a variety of aquatic habitats, wetlands and nurseries [4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. P. lacustris belongs to the Clade 6, the group of species connected with water environment and trees, and tolerant of high temperatures [11,12].…”
