Widely Tunable Opto-Electronic Oscillator Based on a Dual-Frequency Laser

Abstract: We report on an opto-electronic oscillator (OEO) widely tunable from 2.5 to 5.5 GHz. It is based on an Er,Yb:glass Dual-Frequency Laser operating at 1.53 which naturally provides an electrically-tunable beatnote. Inserted in an optical frequency-locked loop including a long fiber delay line, the laser beatnote reaches a spectral purity comparable to the one obtained with classical fixed frequency OEOs. As the oscillator scheme does not require an RF filter, the tunability is simply achieved by tuning the laser… Show more

“…Moreover, due to the use of a single cavity to produce the two laser beams, their frequency difference is less sensitive to environmental perturbations and usually exhibits a sub-kHz linewidth [40]. We recently demonstrated the realization of a low-noise, widely tunable optoelectronic oscillator based on the stabilization of a solid-state DFL on a 100 m long fiber delay line [41].…”

“…Besides the importance of achieving high spectral purity for the generated microwaves, the tunability is also greatly desired in OEOs. For that reason, numerous studies have been performed to tune the oscillation frequency in different OEO's architectures [4,5,6].…”

“…A widely tunable oscillator based on a solid-state DFL and a long fiber delay line has been proposed and demonstrated few months ago [20]. To reduce the size of the setup, a high-Q fiber ring resonator (FRR) would ideally replace the delay line.…”
