Wideband perforated rectangular dielectric resonator antenna reflectarray

Abstract: A wideband perforated rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (RDRA) reflectarray is presented. The array of RDRA are formed from one piece of material. Air-filled holes are drilled into the material around the RDRA. This technique of fabricating RDRA reflectarray using perforations eliminates the need to position and bond individual elements in the reflectarray and makes the fabrication of the RDRA reflectarray feasible. The ground plane below the reflectarray elements is folded to form a central rectangular… Show more

“…Table 1 compares the proposed broadrange reflectarray element with some of the relevant published structures. It is obvious that our design is able to achieve a reflection phase range much larger than those in [6], [7], [8] and [12]. Although its phase range is still lesser than that in [10], the proposed reflectarray design is much simpler and easier to fabricate as it does not involve multilayer technology.…”

“…DRA can appear in arbitrary shapes such as conical, triangular, rectangular, square, and cylindrical [5]. Various DRA reflectarrays have been explored for achieving low reflection amplitude, large reflection phase range, and slow changing rate in the S curve [6], [7]. However, most of the reported cases have a phase range of less than 360 o .…”

“…The reflectarray elements are designed based on high-resistivity silicon, which is one of the most transparent materials in THz region with a stable dielectric constant [4]. Besides, generally the dielectric reflectarray shows a narrow bandwidth [5]- [6], and therefore a multi-frequency phase-matching method is employed to enhance the gain bandwidth [7]. An aperture efficiency of 49% and a 1-dB gain bandwidth of 27% are obtained.…”

“…Due to low loss and the ability to generate efficient radiation, DRA has been explored for designing various reflectarray antennas to achieve large reflection phase range, slow gradient of reflection phase slope, as well as low reflection loss. In [8,9], the length of the DRA element is varied so that a reflection phase range of 360 • is obtainable. However, this can cause many problems in the manufacturing process as different sizes of DRAs are needed.…”
