Wideband Monopole-Like Radiation Pattern Circular Patch Antenna With High Gain and Low Cross-Polarization

Abstract: A wideband, high gain, low cross-polarization circular patch antenna with linear polarization and monopole like radiation pattern is proposed for wireless communication systems. The impedance bandwidth (|S 11 |< -10 dB) of 36.5% (4.25-6.15 GHz) is achieved at the central frequency of 5.20 GHz. The simulated and measured peak gains are 9.7 dBi and 9.1 dBi, respectively. A good agreement is achieved between the simulated and measured results.

“…Table compares the performance of the proposed unit cell directional antenna with other broadband slot antennas reported in the literature. From the table, it is inferred that the proposed antenna is the most compact slot antenna with high fractional bandwidth compared to References . The antenna in Reference offers 37% bandwidth in the wideband mode and 10% bandwidth in the dual‐band mode.…”

“…The antennas in References provide higher peak gain; however, they are multilayer solutions which increase the antenna's profile and increases fabrication complexity. The proposed antenna outperforms in terms of size as well as realized percentage bandwidth.…”

“…In Ref. , a wideband circular patch antenna having monopole like radiation pattern has been proposed, where an air gap is introduced between the ground plane and the radiating patch which actually makes the antenna configuration to be nonplanar and also increases the overall dimensions of their structure.…”

“…In order to improve the bandwidth of the circular patch antenna, several typical broadband monopolar patch antennas fabricated on PCB were proposed, including a ring‐coupled circular patch antenna , a via‐loaded patch antenna , a via‐loaded and ring‐coupled patch antenna . Apart from these typical antennas structured with PCB fabrication, some monopolar antennas with air substrate were also proposed to have wider bandwidths. In Ref.…”
