Wideband Infrared Emission from Yb3+- and Nd3+-Doped Bi2O3–B2O3 Glass Phosphor for an Optical Coherence Tomography Light Source

Abstract: We have investigated the spectroscopic properties of Bi 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 glasses doped with Nd 3þ and Yb 3þ separately, and doubly doped with the same ions, in order to search for appropriate phosphors for an optical coherence tomography (OCT) light source. The effects of Yb 3þ and Nd 3þ co-doping and varying Yb 3þ concentration on the spectrum shape were studied to obtain an optimum line shape for OCT. We successfully obtained a Gaussian-like shape spectrum from 5.0Yb 2 O 3 -1.0Nd 2 O 3 -46.0Bi 2 O 3 -46.0B 2 O… Show more

“…Spectral properties of Nd 3+ [12][13][14], Sm 3+ [13], Dy 3+ [13], Er 3+ [15,16], Yb 3+ [17], and codoped Nd 3+ and Yb 3+ [18] ions in the glasses, energy transfer process between Yb 3+ and Er 3+ ions [19] in the co-doped glasses, and the influence of some rare earth ions on structure and crystallization properties of the glasses [20][21][22][23] have been studied. However, to our knowledge, spectral properties of Tm 3+ -doped bismuth borate glass have not been reported till now.…”

“…To realize this light source, we synthesized a phosphor that emits at around 1000 nm using Bi 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 based glasses doped with Yb 3þ and Nd 3þ . 6) In this letter, we report the fabrication and evaluation of this new type of high power, high-resolution near-infrared light source using the Bi 2 O 3 -B 2 O 3 -based glass phosphor.…”

“…Material to be Added in the Porcelain Products Glass phosphor [6] that is highly transparent and emits near infrared rays (peak wavelength of 1,000 nm) when irradiated by laser beam (optical excitation) drew the attention of the authors as the candidate material satisfying Requirements 1 and 2 above. Glass phosphor is produced by melting a mixture of powders consisting of small amounts of rare earth oxides and the supporting glass, which has the following characteristics.…”
