Wide temperature range studies of the low frequency THz spectrum of benzoic acid using FTIR spectroscopy

Abstract: Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy was employed to measure the low frequency terahertz transmission spectrum of benzoic acid over a wide temperature range. One broad absorption peak was observed at room temperature but more peaks appeared as the sample was cooled. All the peaks shifted to higher frequencies with the decrease in temperature and they displayed a rate of change in the range of (2–5.6) x 10 −2 cm −1 K −1 . An anomalous behav… Show more

“…Terahertz spectra are usually associated with homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening that leads to the concealment of spectra features at room temperature. 49 This can be counteracted by low-temperature measurements. Cooling of the samples reduces broadening and therefore can unmask spectral features that do not appear in room-temperature spectra.…”

“…Therefore, FTIR technology can serve as a complementary spectral technique to Terahertz time domain spectroscopy system (THz-TDS) and is a suitable tool for studying low-frequency Terahertz spectra of materials. It can provide more comprehensive and in-depth information for Terahertz band analysis and exhibits high accuracy and reliability (Lepodise, 2020;Chamorro-Posada et al, 2016). Uric acid stones are common in the urinary system and are the only stones that can be dissolved by drugs.…”
