Wide-band planar monopole antennas

Abstract: Abstract-The circular disc monopole (CDM) antenna has been reported to yield wide-impedance bandwidth. Experiments have been carried out on a CDM that has twice the diameter of the reported disc with similar results. New configurations are proposed such as elliptical (with different ellipticity ratios), square, rectangular, and hexagonal disc monopole antennas. A simple formula is proposed to predict the frequency corresponding to the lower edge of the bandwidth for each of these configurations. The elliptical… Show more

“…Extensive effort has been made to modify its structure for increasing its bandwidth. For example, the monopole wire antenna is changed into a printed version [1][2][3][4], such as the circular disk monopole antenna having 10 : 1 bandwidth used in UWB systems [5]. The triangular monopole printed antenna is introduced in [6] and is shown to have a variable bandwidth as a function of its tapering angle.…”

“…The omnidirectional monopole antenna is modified by adding different shapes of reflectors such as planar reflector [7], corner reflectors [8,9], curved reflectors [10], ring reflectors [11], and others to obtain the unidirectional or bidirectional beams. To enhance the bandwidth, the linear monopole is extended to surface monopole [12] or three-dimensional (3D) monopole [13][14][15]. To realize the bidirectional pattern along the UWB frequency range, this paper presents the circular disc monopole (CDM) excited rectangular ring antenna.…”
