Wide area monitoring of sustained oscillations using double-stage mode decomposition

Abstract: This study presents a systematic approach to monitor sustained oscillations in real-time power systems. In general, monitoring of sustained oscillation means detection of oscillating frequency, its time range, type, and source of sustained oscillation. The basic steps adopted in paper include double-stage mode decomposition (DSMD), spectral and statistical analysis. The DSMD follows decomposition of signals by using improved complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise followed by further… Show more

“…For example, the spectral tools generally requires a constant sampling rate at which signal is sampled, e.g. for frequency estimation of power oscillations [3]. Also, this sampling/data rate should be constant throughout in the retrieved signal, to intact the precision in monitoring results.…”

“…Ψ is just one index among several indices required to govern overall performance. For example, the application developed in [29] for oscillation monitoring utilized a mode decomposition technique, and thus, it will give low Ψ due to the heavy computation burden involved in comparison to a simple power spectral density (PSD) operation. On the other hand, the application developed by authors of [29] would give better oscillation detection results subjected to mode mixing problems [29].…”

“…An equivalent power system model in the frequency domain considering noisy PMU data and uncertain generator parameters is developed in [21] and a numerical procedure based on Bayesian framework is adopted to identify the source of FO. Reference [22] proposes a double stage mode decomposition technique, while [23] discusses an unknown input observer (UIO) based method to locate the source of FO. Initially, the linearized power system model considering the unknown oscillation sources from a prime mover, excitation system etc.…”
