Wide Area Measurement System in Action

Abstract: This paper presents functionality of developed wide area monitoring system (WAMS) and its implementation in Slovenian transmission system. The system enables real-time exchange of selected phasors between transmission system operators. Additionally, recordings captured on November 4 th 2006, when the UCTE interconnected grid split into three areas are presented and discussed. At the end some indications of possible future development of wide area protection and control system are given.

“…Instead, it operates only on knowing geographical distances between measuring points and considering wave DTOA between them. For the two presentedcases, input PMU data was provided by the WAProtector application, produced in the company ELPROS, Slovenia [15]. Measurements from six locations in ENTSO-E were available, marked with round dots in Fig.…”

“…However, load modeling is still a challenging issue due to the complexity, time variation and stochastic characteristics of loads. The development of phasor measurement units (PMU) and wide area measurement systems (WAMS) paves the way to address the load modeling challenge [2] [3] .WAMS can provide synchronized real-time data at a regional and national scale [4] , which are likely to lead to measurement based composite load modeling with higher accuracy and real-time characteristics [5] .…”

“…The main structure of the proposed method is also outlined in this section. In Section 4, the EPRI-36 bus simulation model [16] and actual measured signal from WAProtector [17] are utilised to evaluate the performances and validities of the hybrid method. Finally, the main conclusions are summarised briefly.…”
