Single-Layer High Gain Endfire Antenna Based on Spoof Surface Plasmon Polaritons

A novel high gain endfire antenna based on the spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPP) transmission line (TL) is proposed in this paper. The antenna is designed on a groundless single metal layer inherited the advantages of SSPP. Combined with asymmetric radiation elements of SSPP TL and an elliptical director, this antenna generates endfire radiation beams with 15.75-17.5 GHz. Although the aperture is small, it has obtained a high gain from 10.5 to 12.1 dBi and a high efficiency of 95% overall the operating bandwidth. Measurement results agree well with the simulations. The advantages of single-layer, high gain and low profile make its valuable in wireless communications. INDEX TERMS Endfire, spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPP), single-layer.

Spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) antennas are of particular importance in communication and radar systems. Currently available SSPP radiation devices are limited to low performance with high side‐lobes because it is extremely challenging to accurately control the wave vector of SSPP and the inherent momentum mismatch between the SSPP and spatial waves. Inspired by the optical principle of reversibility, high‐performance radiation control of SSPP is proposed to be achieved with transmissive phase gradient metasurface (TPGM). The TPGM, placed a meticulously optimized distance above the SSPP propagation structure, can provide an additional opposite wave vector to match the momentum between the SSPP and spatial waves. When the propagating SSPP transmits on the TPGM, it can be decoupled into the free space accurately and flexibly. Numerical results coincide well with the measurements, indicating that the radiation control of SSPP achieves high‐performance and low side‐lobe within 9 to 10.5 GHz with the measured radiation efficiency higher than 50%. The measured maximum efficiency appears at 9.8 GHz for 69%. Thanks to the flexible and accurate manipulation of the dispersion relation of SSPP provided by TPGM, the findings may open an avenue in achieving larger angle scanning antenna.

Pattern Reconfigurable Antenna Applying Spoof Surface Plasmon Polaritons for Wide Angle Beam Steering

A pattern reconfigurable antenna based on switchable spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) transmission line is experimentally presented. There are two fundamental modes on traditional SSPPs transmission line, the odd mode and the even mode. In this paper, we propose the switching of fundamental modes transmitted on the SSPPs transmission line by controlling the status of three PIN diodes. As a consequence, the proposed antenna can provide a broadside radiation beam (in the even mode) and an endfire radiation beam (in the odd mode). The measured results show that for broadside radiation, the main lobe direction ranges from 56 • to 84 • within the operating band (|S 11 | < −10 dB) of 4.85-5.25 GHz, while for the endfire radiation, the main lobe points almost constantly to x-direction within 4.85-5.25 GHz. By switching the antenna working state, the proposed antenna can realize almost 84 • beam switching at 4.85 GHz. The pattern reconfigurability of this antenna with favorable performance characteristics, such as high gain, frequency scanning, low profile, and wide-angle beam switching, makes it an ideal candidate for many WLAN and satellite communication applications.
