Wi-Fi Channel Bonding: An All-Channel System and Experimental Study From Urban Hotspots to a Sold-Out Stadium

Abstract: In this paper, we present WACA, the first system to simultaneously measure all 24 Wi-Fi channels that allow channel bonding at 5 GHz with microsecond scale granularity. With WACA, we perform a first-of-its-kind measurement study in areas including urban hotspots, residential neighborhoods, universities, and even a game in Futbol Club Barcelona's Camp Nou, a sold-out stadium with 98,000 fans and 12,000 simultaneous Wi-Fi connections. We study channel bonding in this environment, and our experimental findings re… Show more

“…The work [25] analytically studies the performance of a multi-channel bonding mechanism that supports delay-sensitive multimedia applications. The work in [26] presents a system to simultaneously measure all Wi-Fi channels that support channel bonding in the 5 GHz band with a microsecond scale granularity. The authors in [27] propose an online decentralized primary channel selection approach for dynamic channel bonding, that improves the network throughput by considering both the availability of the primary channel and the pursuit of the secondary channels.…”

“…details on the dataset. Compared to [20], [21], in this work we have implemented a wholly new Wi-Fi state machine, capable of (i) fully characterizing the temporal dynamics of the system under finite traffic loads, i.e., non-full buffer conditions, and (ii) supporting multiple Wi-Fi interfaces and packet buffers.…”

“…In other approaches, the frequency range used or intended to be used in the selected application is subjected to measurements and analysis [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ]. In this case, researchers give particular attention to 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz ISM bands, widely used by WLAN devices [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ].…”
