The benefit of using WiFi for Internet connection is obvious: cost-effective and powerful. WiFi gives us the flexibility and convenience of not being tied to a fixed location. Nowadays, more and more electronic devices and gadgets, such as mobile phones, cameras, gaming devices, TV and entertainment equipment, are WiFi enabled. WiFi also enables your devices to share files instantly. WiFi broadcasting devices, such as Chromecast, give you extra convenience by allowing you to stream video and audio contents from your mobile phone to your TV using WiFi connection. However, this kind of flexibility and convenience comes with a cost. Sharing files, streaming contents or even accessing the Internet via WiFi means signals are being transmitted and they can be captured by anyone with a computer or mobile phone installed with appropriate software. Therefore, it is important to let WiFi users know their security risks and how to minimize them. Educating WiFi users to reduce the WiFi security risk is one of our on-going missions. Basing on empirically collected data, this paper is report of a comprehensive study on the use of WiFi and WiFi networking and the knowledge of WiFi users of the risks and security issues involved in using WiFi in Hong Kong. Findings of the study highlight the WiFi security knowledge gaps of the users in Hong Kong so that stakeholders can take action to improve Internet security by eliminating the security gaps identified.

The IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless local area networking (WLAN), commercially known as Wi-Fi, has become a necessity in our day-today life. Over a billion Wi-Fi access points connect close to hundred billion of IoT devices, smart phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, smart TVs, video cameras, monitors, printers, and other consumer devices to the Internet to enable millions of applications to reach everyone, everywhere. The evolution of Wi-Fi technology also resulted in the first commercial piloting of spread spectrum, high speed optical communications, OFDM, MIMO and mmWave pulse transmission technologies, which then became more broadly adopted by cellular phone and wireless sensor networking industries. The popularity and widespread Wi-Fi deployment in indoor areas further motivated innovation in opportunistic cyberspace applications that exploit the ubiquitous Wi-Fi signals. The RF signal radiated from Wi-Fi access points creates an "RF cloud" accessible to any Wi-Fi equipped device hosting or supporting these opportunistic applications. Wi-Fi positioning and location intelligence were the first popular opportunistic applications of Wi-Fi's RF cloud. Today, researchers are investigating opportunistic applications of Wi-Fi signals for gesture and motion detection as well as authentication and security. This paper provides a holistic overview of the evolution of Wi-Fi technology and its applications as the authors experienced it in the last few decades.

Mobile internet and consumer happiness: the role of risk

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of mobile internet (MI) use and risk factors on MI happiness. Design/methodology/approach An online survey with 521 MI users was conducted to test the direct and moderating effects of risk factors on MI happiness. Findings The results provide evidence that there is a non-linear relationship between variety of use and MI happiness, and consumers become happier with increased frequency of use. The results also indicate that the privacy risk and task risk reduce MI happiness, and both types of risks moderate the inverted U-shaped relationship between variety of use and MI happiness. Research limitations/implications This study reconciles two opposing theories, stimulation vs displacement, on the impact of internet use on consumer well-being. The findings suggest that the stimulation effect of MI use is associated with an intermediate level of usage variety, while social displacement is more likely connected with higher- or lower-variety of use. Risk plays an important role in exploring the boundary conditions of both theories. The findings also have important implications to the debate over the role of privacy in consumer adoption of internet services or applications. Originality/value This study reconciles two opposing theories, stimulation vs displacement, on consumer happiness by elaborating the role of risk associated with MI use.
