We live in complex times in the health, social, political, and energy spheres, and we must be aware of and implement new trends in intelligent social health systems powered by the Internet of Things (IoT). Sustainable development, energy efficiency, and public health are interrelated parameters that can transform a system or an environment for the benefit of people and the planet. The integration of sensors and smart devices should promote energy efficiency and ensure that sustainable development goals are met. This work is carried out according to a mixed approach, with a literature review and an analysis of the impact of the Sustainable Development Goals on the applications of the Internet of Things and smart systems. In the analysis of results, the following questions are answered about these systems and applications: a) Are IoT applications key to the improvement of people’s health and the environment? b) Are there research and case studies implemented in cities or territories that demonstrate the effectiveness of IoT applications and their benefits to public health? c) What sustainable development indicators and objectives can be assessed in the applications and projects analyzed?

The factors affecting the penetration of certain diseases such as COVID-19 in society are still unknown. Internet of Things (IoT) technologies can play a crucial role during the time of crisis and they can provide a more holistic view of the reasons that govern the outbreak of a contagious disease. The understanding of COVID-19 will be enriched by the analysis of data related to the phenomena, and this data can be collected using IoT sensors. In this paper, we show an integrated solution based on IoT technologies that can serve as opportunistic health data acquisition agents for combating the pandemic of COVID-19, named CIoTVID. The platform is composed of four layers—data acquisition, data aggregation, machine intelligence and services, within the solution. To demonstrate its validity, the solution has been tested with a use case based on creating a classifier of medical conditions using real data of voice, performing successfully. The layer of data aggregation is particularly relevant in this kind of solution as the data coming from medical devices has a very different nature to that coming from electronic sensors. Due to the adaptability of the platform to heterogeneous data and volumes of data; individuals, policymakers, and clinics could benefit from it to fight the propagation of the pandemic.

Covid-19 has become a deadly pandemic claiming more than three million lives worldwide. SARS-CoV-2 causes distinct pathomorphological alterations in the respiratory system, thereby acting as a biomarker to aid its diagnosis. A multimodal framework (Ai-CovScan) for Covid-19 detection using breathing sounds, chest X-ray (CXR) images, and rapid antigen test (RAnT) is proposed. Transfer Learning approach using existing deep-learning Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based on Inception-v3 is combined with Multi-Layered Perceptron (MLP) to develop the CovScanNet model for reducing false-negatives. This model reports a preliminary accuracy of 80% for the breathing sound analysis, and 99.66% Covid-19 detection accuracy for the curated CXR image dataset. Based on Ai-CovScan, a smartphone app is conceptualised as a mass-deployable screening tool, which could alter the course of this pandemic. This app ’s deployment could minimise the number of people accessing the limited and expensive confirmatory tests, thereby reducing the burden on the severely stressed healthcare infrastructure.
