“…These symptoms can be caused by Colletotrichum acutatum , C. fragariae and C. gloeosporioides (Freeman et al ., 1998). However, only C. acutatum (teleomorph: Glomerella acutata ) is classified as a quarantine organism on strawberries in the EU (Bosshard, 1997). The symptoms caused by the three Colletotrichum species named above can be very similar, but given the implications of finding a quarantine organism, it is critical to be able to accurately distinguish them.…”

“…In Bulgaria, no detailed study regarding the inter‐ and intra‐specific diversity of the Colletotrichum species population has been performed to date. This issue has an added administrative significance, as C. acutatum is included in the list of quarantine diseases for Bulgaria as well as for many other European countries (Bossard, 1997). After large‐scale field surveys during the 2004 and 2005 seasons, anthracnose was registered in seven of eight visited districts and it was established that plants in almost half of the strawberry fields were infected (Jelev and Bobev, 2005).…”

“…The control of Colletotrichum diseases of strawberry requires a combination of chemical, cultural and genetic methods but regular pesticide applications are environmental contaminants and are not yet considered an appropriate cultivation practice. In Europe, C. acutatum is considered as a quarantine organism (Barrau et al 2001, Bosshard 1997, Denoyes-Rothan and Baudry 1995, Freeman and Katan 1997.…”
