Suicide mortality in a population has long been thought to be sensitive to social, economic and cultural contexts. This review examined research on the relationship between social-environmental variables and suicide mortality published over a ten-year period. The main areas covered in the review included: the economy and income, unemployment, relationship status, fertility and birth rates, female participation in the workforce, religion, migration, location of residence, modernisation, media reporting, alcohol, and access to suicide methods. Results of the review indicated that rates of suicide mortality (deaths per 100,000 in a population) were sensitive to a wide range of social factors. There were relatively stable associations noted between divorce and unemployment with suicide mortality, while many of the reported associations between suicide mortality and other social variables (such as religion, fertility and female participation in the workforce) were influenced by contextual factors and time. These findings indicate the importance of considering the relationship between social factors and suicide as dynamic phenomena.

The elderly population size is increasing worldwide due to prolonged life expectancy and falling birth rates. Traditionally, suicide rates increase with age. For example, a recent cross-national study of 62 developing and developed countries reported an increase in suicide rates with aging in males and females in 25 and 27 countries respectively (Shah, 2007a). Thus, suicides in the elderly are an important public health concern. While much is known about proximal (individual level) risk and protective factors for elderly suicides (e.g. Conwell et al., 1991; Cattell and Jolley, 1995; Harwood et al., 2001), less is known about more distal (societal or population level) risk and protective factors (Rehkopf and Buka, 2006). Moreover, detailed knowledge of these distal factors may have greater public health relevance for the development of comprehensive prevention strategies (Knox et al., 2004).

Ö ÖZ ZE ET T A Am ma aç ç: : Askerlik, nüfus populasyonu açısından genç ve sağlıklı kişilerin yaptığı bir görev-dir. Türkiye'de 20 yaşına gelmiş her erkeğin askerlik yapma zorunluluğu bulunmaktadır. Askerler fiziksel ve psikiyatrik özellikler bakımdan toplumun diğer kesimlerine göre farklılık göstermektedir. Ayrıca, asker ölümlerinin sıklığı ve nedenleri, bölgesel ve çevresel faktörlere göre değişmektedir. Bu çalışmada, otopsisi yapılan asker ölümlerinin incelenmesi ve adli tıp açı-sından değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. G Ge er re eç ç v ve e Y Yö ön nt te em ml le er r: : Elazığ'da 2009-2014 yılları arasındaki beş yıllık süreçte Fırat Üniversitesi Adli Tıp Ana Bilim Dalında otopsisi yapılan 1.212 olgu retrospektif olarak incelendiğinde; olguların 66 (%5,4)'sının asker ölümü olduğu saptandı. Bu olgular yaş, cinsiyet, rütbe, ölüm zamanı, orijin ve ölüm nedeni açısından değerlendirildi. B Bu ul lg gu ul la ar r: : Bu çalışmada olguların tamamı erkek olup, ölümlerin en sık 21 (%36,4) yaşında meydana geldiği görüldü. Orijin bakımından ölümlerin en sık %47 (n=31) ile terör, %28,8 (n=19) ile de intihar kaynaklı olduğu saptandı. Ölümlerin 49 (%74,2) olguyla en fazla ateşli silah yaralanması sonucu gerçekleştiği ve ölen askerlerin %71 (n=47)'inin rütbesinin er ve erbaş olduğu tespit edildi.
