Whooping cough: Are health‐care workers putting children at risk?

Abstract: HCW have low rates of immunity to whooping cough and misconceptions about whooping cough infection and immunisation. Over a quarter of HCW did not agree that a booster should be offered. An ongoing education programme addressing the attitudes and misconceptions identified in this study is a crucial component of the campaign to increase the uptake of adult whooping cough booster immunisation by HCW.

“…In Germany 91 and Australia 97 misconceptions about pertussis were more prevalent among nursing health professionals. It should be pointed out that these professionals have greater direct contact with high risk children, and have been more frequently identified as primary cases in pertussis outbreaks reported in neonatal units 65,66,67,68,69,72,94,98 .…”

“…[4][5][6][7][8][9][10] Infected health care workers (HCWs) can serve as an important transmission vector for susceptible people, particularly young infants. 4,[11][12][13] Adults are more likely to have mild or atypical symptoms, and therefore infected HCWs may continue to work with unrecognized illness. 1,4,8 HCWs often have high occupational mobility in pediatric facilities, promoting the spread of acquired pathogens.…”
