Whom to Help: Prosocial Behaviors and the Restoration of a Tarnished Identity

Abstract: How can moral transgressors rebuild their image as good people? Using affect control theory, I hypothesize that prosociality—benefitting others—will blunt negative impressions of a norm violator. I also hypothesize that benefitting good or weak people—and not bad or powerful people—will amplify the positive effect of prosociality. In two survey-vignette studies, participants reported their perceptions about a man who takes money from a found wallet—unethical behavior—and gives or does not give it to someone el… Show more

“…For example, the girl shot by a police officer in a headline could be seen as either someone suspicious or an innocent victim. To keep the police officer identity intact, respondents can also provide context through sequencing-detailing events that preceded or followed to mitigate the effect of the bad behavior on good identities (Cerulo, 1998;Ramos, 2023). Our analyses show 40% of responses to ABO headlines included sequencing and police officers have the highest likelihood of being sequenced, almost twice that of men (0.53, p < .01).…”

“…After South America became completely separated from Africa, less than 100 million years ago, the tectonic regime changed from being extensional, with large manifestations o volcanism, to compressive, thus initiating the deformation and the build-up of the Andes (Ramos, 1989). This change in the tectonic regime gave rise to the beginning of the Andean Orogenic Cycle, with the development of a magmatic arc (Coastal Cordillera), a trans-arc extensional basin and a sedimentary platform, marking the transition to the foreland (Introcaso et al, 1992).…”
