Whole Milk and Oral RehydrationS Solution for Calves with Diarrhea of Spontaneous Origin

Abstract: Forty-two calves (mean 10 d of age) that spontaneously contracted diarrhea were used to test the therapeutic value of an oral rehydration solution with or without whole milk. Therapy began on the first feeding after a fecal score was > 2 (five-point scale). Amounts (percentages of BW daily) of milk and oral rehydration solution on d 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, and 7 for treatments 1, 2, and 3 were 1) 0 and 10, 5 and 5, 7.5 and 2.5, 10 and 0% (in two feedings); 2) 2.5 and 10, 5 and 7.5, 7.5 and 5, 10 and 0% (in … Show more

“…The milk intake of calves decreased in the period of diarrhea in all feeding regimens which may be due to a reduced appetite (Garthwaite et al, 1994). However, the milk a.l.þwater-ORS calves had with 7.2 L/d higher milk intakes than the milk-ORS (5.1 L/d) and water-ORS calves (4.8 L/d) in the period of diarrhea.…”

“…The most common cause of decreases in plasma volume is the loss of sodium-containing fluid, as in diarrhoea (Boyd, 1981), which is often observed in SS-affected broiler chicks. It has been reported that electrolyte supplementation to drinking water improved the state of animals suffering from diarrhoea (Koiwa et al, 1990Mitchell et al, 1992Garthwaite et al, 1994;Naylor and Liebel, 1995).…”

“…The suspension of milk intake resulted in a greater weight loss (FETTMANN et al, 1986;GARTHWAITE et al, 1994;GOODELL et al, 2012), and in more severe energy imbalance and hypoglycemia, which is not compensated by OES intake even those containing high levels of glucose. If the calf is depressed or refuses to suckle, the milk supply can be suspended for no more than 12 hours and a hypertonic OES (containing high glucose concentration) should be, preferably, administered (SMITH, 2009;SMITH & BERCHTOLD, 2014).…”
