Whole genome sequencing of an ethnic Pathan (Pakhtun) from the north-west of Pakistan

Abstract: BackgroundPakistan covers a key geographic area in human history, being both part of the Indus River region that acted as one of the cradles of civilization and as a link between Western Eurasia and Eastern Asia. This region is inhabited by a number of distinct ethnic groups, the largest being the Punjabi, Pathan (Pakhtuns), Sindhi, and Baloch.ResultsWe analyzed the first ethnic male Pathan genome by sequencing it to 29.7-fold coverage using the Illumina HiSeq2000 platform. A total of 3.8 million single nucleo… Show more

“…There is a limited amount of studies reporting complete genomes using NGS technology from different ethnic groups in North Africa [19,64,65,66], especially, together with clinical data. We detected the variants of the candidate genes, GCAT, SLC6A13, TESK2, VCP, PCNX, and NUP88 using the CRAVAT v.4 server.…”

“…Subsets from the Pathan ethnic group seem to originate from European Greeks (24,25) and Afghans (26). The recent genome sequencing of one male Pathan from the North-West Province of Pakistan confirmed the admixture between European and Asian lineages (27). The Hazara population belongs to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, near the Afghanistan border, and in some parts of Baluchistan.…”

“…Additionally, independent groups have recently published two Indian and two Pakistani genomes with an overall 25-30× sequencing coverage [16][17][18][19] . Recently, the GenomeAsia 100 K project reported genomes of 1,739 individuals, including 113 individuals of Pakistani origin (https://browser.genomeasia100k.org).…”
