Whole Gene Family Expression and Drought Stress Regulation of Aquaporins

Abstract: Since many aquaporins (AQPs) act as water channels, they are thought to play an important role in plant water relations. It is therefore of interest to study the expression patterns of AQP isoforms in order to further elucidate their involvement in plant water transport. We have monitored the expression patterns of all 35 Arabidopsis AQPs in leaves, roots and flowers by cDNA microarrays, specially designed for AQPs, and by quantitative real-time reverse transcriptase PCR (Q-RT-PCR). This showed that many AQPs … Show more

“…Roots and Is Induced by Anoxia Stress-Consistent with previous observations of microarray (31) and promoter-reporter fusion data (32), Q-PCR analysis of total RNA from various organs of 2-week old Arabidopsis shows that AtNIP2;1 transcript is predominantly expressed in roots compared with other organs (Fig. 1A).…”

“…As shown in Fig. 5, a low but detectable signal was observed for all NIPs in 10-day-old Arabidopsis seedlings, except AtNIP4;1, which is expressed at an exceedingly low level based on microarray and Q-PCR data (31). Although AtNIP1;1 showed a slight increase in expression in response to water logging, all other NIP transcripts showed little or no change in response to flooding or anoxia stress compared with AtNIP2;1 (Fig.…”

“…npg The expression level of AtPIP1;1 increased in the aerial parts during the 12 h-drought treatment, but decreased in roots. In another study, similar expression regulation in AtPIPs was observed in response to drought [12]. However, due to different experimental conditions, some PIPs were different regulated.…”

“…We also observed that the transcript level of OsPIP2;4 in roots as well as some PIP genes in leaves of lowland rice remained unchanged under water deficit (Figure 3). These observations are not explained by the above-mentioned points, but in Arabidopsis, up-or down-regulation of PIP genes under water deficit was also described [11,12]. This diversity of PIP expression patterns in plants implies that the role of aquaporins in drought resistance is influenced by many factors.…”

“…This differential expression could be plant-, aquaporin-, or stress-specific. Differential expression of aquaporins in response to different environmental stresses has been comprehensively evaluated in several plant species such as Arabidopsis, maize, poplar and B. rapa in the past years (Alexandersson et al 2005;Zhu et al 2005;Cohen et al 2013;Tao et al 2014). Regarding common bean, few aquaporins have been characterized to date.…”
