Whole‐body vibration for functional constipation: a single‐centre, single‐blinded, randomized controlled trial

Abstract: These findings suggest that low-intensity WBV induced via a noninvasive oscillation platform may be an effective therapy for reducing symptom severity in patients with chronic functional constipation.

“…Another important explanation for the different conclusions is that patients included in our study experienced more serious constipation symptoms with higher CSI scores compared with several other studies using the same symptom scoring system. 19 , 20 The pathogenesis of refractory constipation may be more complex and RH may participate in it.…”

“…A self-administered modified CSI was used to assess constipation symptoms. 18 20 The modified CSI, which is a reliable and valid instrument to evaluate constipation, includes 3 subscales: obstructive defecation (6 scores), colonic inertia (6 scores), and pain (4 scores). The scores range for each subscale is 0 to 28, 0 to 29, and 0 to16 (overall CSI score range, 0 to74 points), respectively.…”

“…A promising avenue for constipation therapy is direct mechanical stimulation of the intestine, or dispersion of stool within a hollow lumen facilitating movement. Previous studies using various types of external vibration devices, such as a vibrating platform or an external vibrating belt, 6,7 have suggested that vibration devices may help constipation. Wu and colleagues tested low‐intensity whole‐body vibration induced by a noninvasive oscillation platform and found that it may be an effective therapy for reducing symptom severity in patients with chronic functional constipation compared to a control group of no treatment 6 .…”

The vibrating capsule, builds on these electro‐mechanical devices, and unlike external vibration, the vibrating capsule may stimulate the intestinal wall by local contact and enhance movement of stool, but this hypothesis merits further testing.…”

“…and T cell differentiation and clinical parameters might be related to disease occurrence and deserves in-depth study. A report demonstrated that vertical vibration could alleviate the severity of symptoms in patients with chronic functional constipation (Wu et al, 2012), verified the therapeutic effect of WBV. In addition, inflammation-related diseases in the body may be alleviated, although sometimes the symptoms may be less pronounced.…”
