Whole blood viscosity is associated with extrahepatic metastases and survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract: Whole blood viscosity (WBV) is increased in cancer patients and associated with the advanced stage with systemic metastases. However, relevance of WBV in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. This pilot study included a discovery cohort of 148 treatment-naïve HCC patients with preserved liver function, and a validation cohort of 33 treatment-experienced HCC patients with nivolumab. Systolic and diastolic WBV was measured using an automated scanning capillary tube viscometer at diagnosis or before the… Show more

“…20 However, the aforementioned sensors were delivered to the targeted regions passively, which restricts the further applications, such as tumor diagnosis. Specifically, the viscosity of blood around lumps could be a symbol for detecting tumors, 21 but the lumps in deep regions, such as the base of skull, are hard to be accessed passively. The soft millirobot with active locomotion capability has been developed for sensing, 22 but the lack of deformability could hinder the movement of robot in confined environment.…”

“…Similarly, high whole blood viscosity is associated with advanced stages of head and neck carcinoma ( Khan et al, 1995 ). Increased whole blood viscosity is also associated with extrahepatic metastasis and reduced survival of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma ( Han et al, 2021 ). Moreover, elevated plasma viscosity has been reported as an independent prognostic marker for the overall survival of breast cancer patients ( Han et al, 2021 ).…”

“…Most microfluidic-based cancer-on-a-chip models use buffers to simulate the interstitial flow of the blood stream, which are very different from the physiological condition, such as the rheology of the blood. Whole blood viscosity positively correlates with the cancer stage and metastases [70][71][72][73]. Thus, the blood viscosity should be taken into consideration before flowing into the cancer chips.…”
