Who Students Interact With? A Social Network Analysis Perspective on the Use of Twitter in Language Learning

Abstract: Abstract. This paper reports student interaction patterns and self-reported results of using Twitter microblogging environment. The study employs longitudinal probabilistic social network analysis (SNA) to identify the patterns and trends of network dynamics. It is building on earlier works that explore associations of student achievement records with the observed network measures. It integrates gender as an additional variable and reports some relation with interaction patterns. Additionally, the paper report… Show more

“…To this end, we analysed records of 80, 000 interactions by 290 students - approximately 16 times more interactions with almost 3 times more students than previous studies on educational networks in natura 5678101215. Even so the data can still be considered to be sparse ( 4.6 interactions per person per day).…”

“…social acceptance or willingness to communicate11. In general, it is not just about knowing “who” the students interact with, but “how” and “when” they do it and, importantly, what is the result of these interactions with regards to the educational outcome12.…”

“…Furthermore, their work has been extended by integrating gender as additional variable to the network. It is found that, students tend to interact with the same gender and no significant evidence of popularity effect in relation to gender [14].…”

“…However, many studies of animal networks focus on species and social processes for which fewer observations are available, meaning that a multilevel network analysis (such as the multi-group analysis we used here) may not always be possible. However, past uses of RSiena have yielded interesting and valid results, even when repeated experiment cannot be performed ( Ullrich et al, 2010 ; van Zalk et al, 2011 ). It thus seems that this tool could be used to study a wide range of animal species, varying in group size, social complexity, and access by observers, as recently shown in Ilany et al (2015) .…”
