The objective of the study was to examine how providing access to multilingual digital picture books affected the reading habits and language development of children from bilingual families. The study included 41 children aged 4–5 from two schools whose parents spoke a heritage language distinct from the environmental language (Dutch), and had a low level of education. The children were randomly assigned to two groups - one with access to digital books solely in the environmental language (Dutch) and the other with a choice between the environmental language and their heritage language. A general vocabulary test was administered before and after a six-week intervention period. The findings indicated that access to digital books motivated reading, with roughly one-third of the children reading a substantial number of books during the intervention. The availability of books in the heritage language did not lead to an increase in book reading. Given a choice, only a minority (33%) preferred to read in their heritage language. The conditions exhibited similar growth in vocabulary, but the study uncovered positive associations between the number of books and vocabulary development.

Esta investigación pretende contribuir al conocimiento sobre el papel de las tecnologías digitales en el mantenimiento y transmisión de la identidad cultural de las familias que forman parte de los flujos migratorios contemporáneos. Las actitudes parentales y las estrategias educativas sobre las tecnologías en familia son determinantes para que los más pequeños puedan mantener su cultura y lengua de origen y desarrollar su propia identidad. Se trata de un estudio con enfoque cualitativo orientado a la comprensión a través de las percepciones de las familias participantes de este fenómeno coetáneo. Los datos han sido recolectados mediante entrevistas en profundidad con familias inmigrantes brasileñas residentes en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos. Se ha creado una base de datos a medida para el análisis de los resultados, que permiten concluir que el papel de las tecnologías digitales en la transmisión cultural entre las familias inmigrantes es aún menor y poco explorado, pero muy prometedor y evidencia todavía un largo recorrido.

Family attitudes and beliefs around digital technologies are a key factor in young children's digital habits in the home. This study involved conducting interviews with 46 families of children under 6 years of age to understand how parental perceptions determine the screen use of young children in terms of activities, content, and time. The aim is to provide knowledge for an in-depth reflection on media management in the home. A descriptive, quantitative study was designed, based on a questionnaire survey model to interview families. The results show few differences between the most positive and the most negative family perceptions of children's use of ICTs. The complexity of the analysis of parental digital education strategies and support systems is evident. The perceptions of families are based upon a balance that avoids extremes, are shrouded in contradictions, and are regulated according to the needs of the context. This leads to the need to consider, globally, the different factors that influence children's digital habits.
