Abstract: Temporary, less healthy, low work ability, poor performing, dissatisfied and "under-invested" workers are at risk for dismissal, whereas older and less healthy workers are (also) at risk for long-term unemployment after being dismissed.

“…The present findings are consistent with previous research associating medical factors with adverse work outcomes such as early retirement, early transition out of work, and unemployment ( Biefang et al, 1998 ; Rice et al, 2011 ; Wagenaar, Kompier, Houtman, van den Bossche, & Taris, 2015 ; Welch, Haile, Boden, & Hunting, 2010 ), although the present study focused on health-related factors reflecting functional status as opposed to medical factors. In addition, successful coping style (McGonagle et al 2015;Wageneer et al 2015) and leisure time physical exercise predict higher work ability (van de Vijfeijke et al 2013;Lindberg et al 2006). Many studies concerning work ability and functioning among unemployed are restricted to diagnose group (e.g.…”

“…Similar findings were reported in the European Household survey, with poor health and chronic conditions as determinants of not entering paid employment in most European countries [ 17 ]. Poor general health [ 18 , 19 ] and decreased work performance due to impaired health [ 20 ] have also been shown to reduce likelihood of re-employment. One limitation in these studies is that the indicators of physical health were measured in a general context, i.e.…”
