Who Cares? A Profile of People who Care for Relatives with a Mental Disorder

Abstract: Carers are significant stakeholders in the mental health system. Providing support for carers is crucial, particularly because their own mental health and well-being may be affected by their care-giving role. The nature of this support should take into account their large numbers, their profile and the role they perform.

“…Mental health care for older people is primarily delivered in the community (WHO, 2013, Commonwealth of Australia, 2009, with significant input from informal carers (Pirkis et al, 2010). In Australia it is estimated that there are 2.7 million informal carers (12% of the population), who provide unpaid care to family members or friends with a disability, mental illness or chronic conditions (ABS 2012).…”

“…A large proportion of people in developed countries have such a role (Collings, 2009;Sinha, 2013), with approximately 9 million people in the United States caring for a person with a mental illness (AARP Public Policy Institute, 2015). In Australia, 15% of the adult population (2.4 million people) are estimated to care for a person with a mental illness (Pirkis et al, 2010).…”
