Background: Redesigning the agri-food system through agroecology represents a common ambition among practitioners, activists and scholars to achieve environmental and socio-economic sustainability. Research can have a main role to support this path. Although it seems that there is a gradual increasing body of agroecology research, it clearly lacks good knowledge about this. The main objective of this study was therefore to map research projects related to agroecology in Europe with the aim to characterize European research in terms of implementation of agroecology elements, identify needs for future cross collaboration between countries and networks, and support the setting up of appropriate research agendas fostering agroecology research in Europe. Methods: A desktop research with different databases related to European and transnational funding programmes was carried out to identify funded research projects involved in agroecology. The obtained projects were used to perform a social network analysis. Furthermore, two surveys were conducted, one with coordinators of identified projects and a second one for researchers engaged in agroecology. Results: Our study highlighted a predominant trajectory of agroecology research prone to the transformation of the agri-food system. France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and United Kingdom were the most active countries engaged in agroecology research. In all surveys, issues related to efficiency improvement, synergies strengthening, local economy development, and co-creation and sharing of knowledge were the most implemented to support agri-food transformation. Transdisciplinary approaches were mainly addressed by European projects. Surveys reported a limited participation of value chain actors, while researchers, farmers, and their associations were the most involved. Survey respondents suggested to increase project duration and introduce flexibility methods to modulate research actions according to dynamic of the contexts. Conclusion: On the basis of the results, some policy recommendations were provided to fostering agroecology research in Europe and its contribution for transformation of agri-foods systems.

The authors assess the current status of scholarly publishing and reach the conclusion that the current situation is both in a state of flux and not sustainable. While such an assessment is becoming increasingly well understood, a solution to the problems seemingly does not exist. What even embodies an improvement to the current state of scholarly publishing depends on one’s perspective. The authors approach the problem from the perspective of the main producers and consumers of scholarly knowledge—academic and governmental research institutions. From this perspective, they define a set of objectives for scholarly publishing and dissemination of published works, and they assess the challenges with current approaches to meeting these objectives for commercial publishers, professional organization publishers, and academic press publishers. Based on this analysis, the authors propose a new model for academic publishing that might help achieve the stated objectives. The academic research community alliance model suggested is based on the scholarly community taking on the responsibilities of peer review, article production, and knowledge dissemination while acting in an altruistic way of doing so. The proposed approach is described in detail, and both challenges and potential solutions to the impediments to implementing this model are explored. Finally, the authors report on initial efforts to build support for the proposed model, which suggests that meaningful progress on this difficult problem is possible.

Relevance. The 2022 Update of the COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, and WAME joint guidelines on The Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing encourages journals to establish their own policy in “data sharing and reproducibility” (DS&R). However, this document neither provides detailed recommendations / templates nor explains the reproducibility crisis phenomenon.Objectives. To analyze and interpret the international guidelines, the best practices of global publishers and journals, as well as typical mistakes and experience of selected Russian journals, to help a journal develop its own DS&R policy and its implementation.Materials and methods. The analysis of various sources (literature, reporting guidelines, data repositories), policies of 83 Russian university journals, as well as policies of the top 5 international publishers and their journals. Interviews with 6 editors-in-chief of Russian journals regarding DS&R.Results. All the top 5 global publishers in their DS&R policy adapt the TOP Guidelines and offer their own data sharing statement templates. Discussion and interpretations. The author suggests Russian translation of the TOP Guidelines and the main templates (e.g., data sharing statement). He also discusses 9 best journal policies and practices (including pre-registration studies).Conclusions. Numerous international sources, as well as the experience of selected Russian journals, demonstrate that the implementation of the DS&R policy increases articles citation (averagely by 25.3%), the growth of journal’s bibliometric and altmetric indicators, and also contributes to the trust of the target audience. As a result, it strengthes the journal portfolio to enable publishing articles well ahead of schedule. However, only the declarative statement of DS&R policies by journals without proper implementation does not bring tangible benefits to the journals.
