Whitening and anti-wrinkle activities of ferulic acid isolated from Tetragonia tetragonioides in B16F10 melanoma and CCD-986sk fibroblast cells

Abstract: Ferulic acid isolated from Tetragonia tetragonioides was tested for its whitening effect on the B16F10 mouse melanoma cell line and its anti-wrinkle activity on the CCD-986sk human dermal fibroblast cell line. Ferulic acid, one of the primary phenolic compounds that can be isolated from T. tetragonioides, has been reported to show potential as a functional food, for its whitening effect and anti-wrinkle activity. To measure its whitening and anti-wrinkle activities, cells were treated with ferulic acid isolate… Show more

“…Many studies investigated cytotoxic and proapoptotic effects of polyphenols in various cancers [36,50,56,57]. In consistency with our outcomes, Park et al established the anticancer potential of FA in the mouse B16F10 melanoma cells [58]. Furthermore, Khanduja et al proved that phenolic compounds, such as FA, significantly reduce apoptosis in normal peripheral blood mononuclear cells, which suggests limited cytotoxicity of FA [59].…”

“…HA is produced and released by fibroblasts, keratinocytes, and chondrocytes. Hyaluronic acid synthases (HAS1, HAS2, and HAS3) are the enzymes belonging to a class of integral membrane proteins involved in hyaluronic acid synthesis [34]. Our results showed that plant extracts fermented with L. buchneri can prevent the UVB-induced downregulation of HAS1 mRNA expression in human epidermal HaCaT keratinocytes (Figure 4).…”

“…Phenylpropanoids and olefinic unsaturated compounds, which include ferulic acid, benzaldehyde (105), astaxanthin, curcumin and cinnamic acid esters (106), have been revealed to exert inhibitory effects on TYR. According to a study by Park et al (107), ferulic acid, one of the main phenolic components found in Tetragonia tetragonioides, suppressed melanin synthesis by reducing the expression of TYR and MITF in B16-F10 cells at concentrations of between 5 and 20 µM. Additionally, Rao et al (108), Niwano et al (109) and Tu et al (110) demonstrated that astaxanthin and curcumin exhibit suppressive properties on melanin synthesis and cellular TYR activity.…”
