Whiteflies of Belize (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)Part 2óa review of the subfamily Aleyrodinae Westwood

Abstract: A field survey of Sternorrhyncha (Hemiptera) in Belize, principally conducted within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve (CFR), has revealed almost 200 species of whiteflies, all but 40 of them belonging to the subfamily Aleyrodinae. Provided here is an illustrated account of described Belize species of Aleyrodidae-Aleyrodinae. This account proposes three new generic synonymies, three new specific synonymies, nine ten combinations, one revalidated species and provides descriptions of three new genera and 12 new speci… Show more

“…Initially, pupae of whitefly were collected from multiple crops in the area of Palmira -Valle del Cauca (Table 1). Pupae at the 4th instar nymph stage were morphologically examined under a light microscope and identified using the keys of Martin et al (2000), Martin (2004), Hodges and Evans (2005), Martin (2005), and Dooley (Dooley 2006).…”

“…and DNA barcodes (99% match to sequence for Aleurotrachelus trachoides ; accession number KF059957) (Hodges and Evans 2005, Walker 2008). Note that Aleurotrachelus trachoides , is a major cosmopolitan pest of commercial plants (Hodges and Evans 2005, Malumphy 2005, Martin 2005, Forest Health 2013 highlights 2014). Thus, Acletoxenus cf. indicus could be considered a potential biological control agent for white flies given that the larvae consume 30 to 40 whitefly puparia during development (Pelov and Trenchev 1973).…”

“…Recently, this whitefly has disseminated into other tropical regions. It was reported from the Palaearctic region (Canary Islands) in 1998 (Hernandez-Suarez et al 2003), the Pacific region (Hawaii in 2006, Wong et al 2006and Samoa, Martin 2005), the Malagasian region (Comoros Islands) in 2002 (Youssoufa et al 2006) and the Afrotropical region: Sao Tomé (Martin 2005), St-Helena (Howard et al 2001) and Uganda (D. Gerling, personal communication 2006). In the same way, it was intercepted at US ports of entry on palms originating in Grenada, St. Lucia and US Virgin Islands (Evans 2007).…”
