White matter changes following electroconvulsive therapy for depression: a multicenter ComBat harmonization approach

Abstract: ECT is proposed to exert a therapeutic effect on WM microstructure, but the limited power of previous studies made it difficult to highlight consistent patterns of change in diffusion metrics. We initiated a multicenter analysis and sought to address whether changes in WM microstructure occur following ECT. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data (n = 58) from 4 different sites were harmonized before pooling them by using ComBat, a batch-effect correction tool that removes inter-site technical variability, preserv… Show more

“…We have mitigated this by use of the ComBat algorithm 32 although originally developed for genomic work, its use in DWI is validated across multiple conditions and patient groups. 44,45 As noted above, correction for multiple comparisons was not performed. As some of the analysis was exploratory, the conventional Bonferroni approach was too conservative and assumed that the tests were independent (which was not the case in this study).…”

“…In traditional imaging, signals are real and objective, reflecting the presence of fluorescent nanoprobes in specific spatial conformations within a substrate [ 374 ]. The integration of computer algorithms facilitates super-resolution (microscopic) and multi-modal (macroscopic) imaging [ 375 , 376 ]. These algorithms can be collectively referred to as “pre-imaging algorithms.” Despite advancements in super-resolution imaging, the inherent limitation of the fluorescent nanoprobe's particle size and the halo formation around nanoparticles during excitation precludes surpassing the nanoparticle size limitation.…”

“…As a pioneer, a profound public cohort, Leading Eigenvector Dynamics Analysis (LEiDA) [ 12 ], provided the rs-fMRI data and the psychometric scale tests performances in healthy aging. In particular, the emerging of multi-site homogenization in recent years, such as the ComBat multi-site homogenization algorithm, can get rid off the heterogeneous functional connection values across different datasets, therefore, it is popular to make use of these plentiful data sources in the world [ 13 ].…”
