White Graphene-Cobalt Oxide Hybrid Filler Reinforced Polystyrene Nanofibers for Selective Oil Absorption

Abstract: In this work, stable hydrophobic nanocomposites are made from electrospun fibers of polystyrene (PS) containing a hybrid filler combination of (i) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and (ii) cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanomaterials. Good synergistic interaction is observed between the nanomaterials, since the growth of Co3O4 was carried out in presence of white graphene nanosheets. Filler synergy modifies the PS surfaces, by enhancing the filler-polymer interfacial interactions and provides good tensile strength. The hyd… Show more

“…The challenge with a surface coating is providing good adhesion to the base membrane to ensure that the coated layer does not peel off during operation or cleaning. Crosslinking [81] or sulfonation are the main mechanisms used to apply the nanoparticle coating to the base membrane.…”

“…Dual-media filter systems can handle high loading of impurities while operating at high filtration rates. In the past, conventional dual-media filter systems consisted of one or more layers made of anthracite coal with a specific gravity of 1.48-1.65 gcm 3 and a silica sand layer with a specific gravity of 2.65 g/cm 3 . The differences in specific gravity are responsible for the 2-3 times higher average particle size of the anthracite than of the sand; therefore, the backwashing process will not affect the arrangement of particular layers, while the anthracite layer will remain above the sand layer.…”

“…As an illustration, the global volumes of produced water volumes were 202 billion barrels in 2014 and were estimated to be approximately 340 billion barrels in 2020 [2]. The estimated produced water volume from shale reservoirs over the first 5-10 years of production ranges from 1.7 to 14.3 million liters per well [3].…”

“…Thus, great effort has been devoted to contaminant removal and water purification. Currently, various approaches including physical adsorption [ 20 , 21 , 22 ], photocatalytic decomposition [ 23 , 24 ], oxidation [ 25 ], etc., have been employed for dye removal. For example, the membranes coated with gallic-acid-modified TiO 2 nanoparticles are successful in separating oil-in-water emulsion and removing water-soluble contaminants.…”
