White‐fruited Duchesnea indica (Rosaceae) is impaired in ANS gene expression

Abstract: Results obtained indicate that the white-fruited character was stable. Mother progenitors exert a strong influence on the expression of the white-fruited character. The white-fruited phenotype is due to the impairment or downregulation of the ANS gene.

“…We assume that slight expression of PgANS is insufficient to produce anthocyanidins that could block anthocyanin accumulation. Similar results have been reported by Kim et al (2004Kim et al ( , 2005, Debes et al (2011), andJaakola et al (2002), who reported that restrictive expression of the ANS gene was responsible for the absence of anthocyanin accumulation.…”

“…5, the PgMYB gene was expressed in both red and white pomegranate fruits. The MYB10 gene has been similarly found to be expressed in red and white genotypes of Duchesnea indica (Debes et al 2011). In contrast, the uniform expression of PgMYB observed in our study differs from results reported by Espley et al (2007) for apple, Kotepong et al (2011) for Malay apple, andLin-Wang et al (2010) for fruits of F. × ananassa and F. vesca.…”

“…In a tobacco model, Aharoni et al (2001) reported that FaMYB1 overexpression is associated with a decreased ANS expression and FGT activity leading to a reduced amount of anthocyanins in flowers, which is consistent with our results. Furthermore, an impairment of ANS and FGT genes causes anthocyanin content reductions in strawberry and other plant species (Kim et al 2005, Griesser et al 2008, Debes et al 2011, Zhao et al 2012.…”

“…Furthermore, few changes of achenescolor of white-fruited D. indica were observed seasonally but never in the red-fruited populations. Successful crosses between D. indica f. indica and D. indica f. albocaput in both directions and self-pollinations were carried out by Debes et al (2011); those authors report compatibility between them and variations in color of fruiting-receptacle and achenes in offspring.…”

“…In addition, mutations in genes encoding for the biosynthetic or transcriptional regulators of the anthocyanin pathway have been linked to changes in color phenotypes (Espley et al, 2009). Molecular studies in red-and whitefruited D. indica reported that impaired in ANS gene expression is responsible of white color of fruits (Debes et al, 2011).…”
