Whirling Disease in California: A Review of Its History, Distribution, and Impacts, 1965–1997

Abstract: Myxobolus cerebralis, the causative agent of whirling disease, has become widely established in wild California salmonid populations since its initial discovery in Monterey County in 1965. Most significant is the occurrence of the parasite in the ''blue ribbon'' trout waters of the Owens Valley basin of the eastern Sierra. From the Lahontan basin on the north to the Owens Valley basin 320 km to the south, the parasite has become well established. In spite of the presence of the parasite, streams of the eastern… Show more

“…Mortalities in wild fi sh populations directly attributable to a T. bryosalmonae infection have not been reported so far although an effect on a wild trout population has been shown for other myxozoans e.g. Myxobolus cerebralis (Hedrick et al, 1998;Modin, 1998).…”

“…Certain mechanisms for the transmission of whirling disease remain unknown, but stocking or transfer of live infected fish to new locations is clearly one known mode (Modin 1998). When the suitable oligochaete and fish hosts and environment are present, whirling disease can thrive.…”

“…Whitney strain was collected from the settling ponds at the California Mt. Whitney Hatchery, USA, where M. cerebralis has been endemic since 1984 (Modin 1998). The Great Lakes strain was obtained from sediments in Lakes Erie and Ontario (Reynoldson et al 1996), where M. cerebralis was first documented in the 1950s in wild salmonids (R. Nelson, United States Fish and Wildlife Service, La Crosse, Wisconsin, pers.…”
