Which technology to which challenge in democratic governance? An approach using design science research

Abstract: Purpose Information systems (IS) play an important role in contemporary society, but critical questions remain on their potential use and impact on democracy. This study aims to contribute to the discussion on which technology can be adequate to which major challenge of democratic governance, through the identification and pairing of challenges of democratic governance with specific information technologies with the potential to be used in applications related to this challenge. This perspective can be conside… Show more

“…For these reasons, we believe that they can be used to improve energy efficiency and digital infrastructure in the forestry sector. This fact is corroborated by a study carried out by Anastasiadou et al [158] which points out that ICTs can help address the challenges of governance and population participation. In addition, Badiane et al [159] state that ICTs can also provide opportunities to strengthen the capacities and skills of the forestry sector both in the public and private spheres, which can be especially important in the context of trade opening.…”

“…The integration of information technology solutions such as AI, system integration, or blockchain technology with democratic governance can help improve public service delivery, enhance citizen trust, and foster political participation if they are implemented in a transparent, accountable, and responsible way [28]. AI applications have the potential to make cities more intelligent and enhance the lifestyles of residents by providing quicker access to goods and services [29].…”

“…Design science research (DSR) is the methodological approach used to connect and pair relevant challenges in the recruitment processes of PF with AI tools that might reveal the potential for purposes related to those challenges. Three studies use this novelty type of paradigm (Anastasiadou, 2019; Anastasiadou et al , 2021; Rosenberger et al , 2017). Because it is a problem-solving paradigm, it tries to create a designed final artifact or solution to a precise problem (Anastasiadou, 2019).…”
