“…The relatively strong female representation among PDs mimics that of pediatric orthopaedics, which reports 11% female FDs as of 2021 3 . Notably, women made up 25% of pediatric orthopaedic fellows in 2014, which is higher than that of the whole orthopaedic workforce from which PDs are chosen 19 , 20 . Interestingly, women are more represented in the proportion of active PDs compared with their proportion in the body of total active orthopaedic surgeons.…”

The main reasons for this were personal interests and lack of strong mentorship in other subspecialties.…”

“…1,2,4 Pediatric orthopaedics ranked third for fellows and second for attendings in 2021 with women comprising 22.9% and 22.6%, respectively. 1,2,4 Female prevalence in pediatric orthopaedics falls behind its surgical counterparts including pediatric otorhinolaryngology (54.8% female fellows) and pediatric urology (42.9% female fellows). 1,2 There are many documented reasons for the presence of sex disparity in orthopaedics.…”
