Hilton (1990) shows that a loss in susceptibility and intensity in an anoxic lake sediment is caused partially by the microbial degradation of magnetite under oxidizing conditions and the oxidation of authigenically formed greigite to a less strongly magnetic form. Hilton (1990) observed a large intensity loss when the sediment was treated with hydrogen peroxide and subsequently dried (this was also observed in unit 4).…”
