Which multi-attribute utility instruments are recommended for use in cost-utility analysis? A review of national health technology assessment (HTA) guidelines

Abstract: Background Several multi-attribute utility instruments (MAUIs) are available from which utilities can be derived for use in cost-utility analysis (CUA). This study provides a review of recommendations from national health technology assessment (HTA) agencies regarding the choice of MAUIs. Methods A list was compiled of HTA agencies that provide or refer to published official pharmacoeconomic (PE) guidelines for pricing, reimbursement or market access. The guidelines were reviewed for recommendations on the i… Show more

“…It is used to inform resource allocation decisions in economic evaluations across the world [2][3][4]. In addition, it is the multi-attribute utility instrument preferred by most published pharmacoeconomic guidelines [5]. The EQ-5D consists of five dimensions: mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression.…”

“…The EQ-5D questionnaire is the most frequently used tool for measuring health state utility values (patient preferences), a tool for quality-adjusted life years (QALY) estimation and a key to conduct cost-effectiveness analysis. Majority of health technology assessment agencies, including the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence in England, recommend the EQ-5D [ 27 ]. Our study is the first to use a new five-level version of the EQ-5D (namely EQ-5D-5L) in CD patients [ 16 ].…”

“…It can be characterised as a succinct and generic instrument, intended to measure health and deviations from it [ 9 ]. The EQ-5D has evolved to become one of the most widely used instrument to operationalise utilities for use in economic evaluation [ 10 , 11 ]. However, informing resource allocation decisions is not the sole use of the instrument.…”
