Whey protein hydrolysate enhances the exercise-induced heat shock protein (HSP70) response in rats

Abstract: Whey protein has been suggested to be potential protective agent against various forms of stress. The heat shock protein HSP70 confers greater cellular tolerance against stressors. The present study evaluated the effects of whey protein intake on HSP70 expression. Forty-eight male Wistar rats were divided into sedentary and exercised groups, and each group was fed as a protein source casein (CAS), whey protein (WP) or whey protein hydrolysate (WPH) for 3weeks. Exercise on a treadmill was used as the source of … Show more

“…Protein carbonyls, biomarkers of oxidative stress were lower in the group that consumed whey protein hydrolysate. From the result, it was inferred that the consumption of whey protein hydrolysate enhances HSP70 expression (De Moura et al 2013). An extension of this study indicated that the whey protein hydrolysate is caoable of augmenting cell survival factors such as HSP90 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) (Moura et al 2014).…”

“…Supplemental lipoic acid, for instance, was seen to cause an increase in the expression of HSP90, which was associated with a rise in protection to the skeletal muscle of horses exercised on a treadmill [18]. In rodents, treadmill exercise has been successfully used to induce HSP response and alter in homeostasis [1,2,19]. …”

“…De Moura et al [1] showed that WPH stimulates glutamine synthetase expression, an enzyme capable of harnessing the nitrogen donated by BCAAs to generate glutamine. Therefore, we determined the concentration of free glutamine in plasma and the results demonstrated that lle-Leu peptide that influenced various immune markers also induced greater free glutamine plasma concentration.…”

“…In any case, a combination of resistance exercise plus nutritional interventions has been raised as promising in treating sarcopenia [26,148]. This is reinforced by the fact that whey protein hydrolysate (WPH), a notable source of glutamine dipeptide, was found to enhance exercise-induced HSP70 response in rats [326].…”
