When Will the Unprecedented 2022 Summer Heat Waves in Yangtze River Basin Become Normal in a Warming Climate?

Abstract: Yangtze River basin (YZB) experienced record‐breaking heat in the summer of 2022. Here, we focused on daytime‐nighttime compound heat waves, and used the magnitude index that considers both duration and intensity to investigate the risk of the 2022 extreme heat. The magnitude of heatwaves in 2022 was much larger than the historical average level, which was estimated as a 1‐in‐64‐year event over 1979–2014 climate. Without mitigation efforts (SSP585), the record‐breaking heat would emerge as normal during 2050s,… Show more

“…The extreme heat and drought event in the Yangtze River Basin in China in 2022 has attracted wide attention (Hua et al., 2023; X. Li et al., 2023; Ma & Yuan, 2023; J. Wang, Yan, et al., 2023). Concurrently, the TP experienced both extreme high temperatures and low PRE during the summer of 2022, reaching levels unprecedented since 2000.…”

“…In the summer of 2022, simultaneous drought and heatwave emerged in many regions of China, especially the Yangtze River Basin (YZB). In July and August, the YZB witnessed the strongest heatwave with the highest average temperature and number of high temperature days (maximum temperature >35 • C) since meteorological observations were available in 1961 (Jiang et al 2023, Ma and Yuan 2023, Wang et al 2023b. Approximately 360 million people experienced temperatures exceeding 40 • C at some point during this summer in China (Mallapaty 2022).…”

“…Moreover, in 2022, the deaths of more than 15,000 people in Europe were associated with unusual heat extremes, and the temperature in the United Kingdom exceeded 40°C for the first time (WMO, 2023). In 2022, long‐lasting heat extremes in China since records began in 1961 were exceeded for 79 days, where over 5 million km 2 were affected (Jiang et al., 2023; Liu et al., 2023; Ma & Yuan, 2023; WMO, 2023).…”
