Natural Resources in Health Tourism: A Systematic Literature Review

Natural resources are recognized among the key determinants for the improvement of wellness, and thus the development and sustainability of health tourism destinations. This study applied a systematic review to investigate the contributions mapping and analyzing under different perspectives the value of the natural resources of a destination and related activities for health tourism. The main research topics identified from a review of 52 papers include the analysis and exploitation of natural resources in health tourism, the nature-based factors considered in clustering of tourists and their motivations, the development of value offer and marketing, as well as the cultural issues. Research gaps and future directions are summarized in a research agenda laying the foundations for the development of a multidisciplinary research stream focused on nature-based health tourism. Results also represent a key reference for managers and policy makers to identify key issues, areas of intervention and practices for industry development in the health tourism destinations through an effective and sustainable exploitation of natural resources.

Zusammenfassung Ziel Konzeption, Umsetzung und formative Evaluation des Einsatzes eines Gesundheitslotsen für Gesundheitsgäste in einem Kurort. Methodik Es wurde eine Bestandserhebung von örtlichen Gesundheitsanbietern durchgeführt und eine Datenbank erstellt. Zudem wurde eine nationale und internationale Literaturrecherche zum Konzept durchgeführt. Gesundheitsgäste wurden zu Erwartungen an einen Gesundheitslotsen und zum Informationsbedarf befragt. Im Zuge der Implementierung erfolgten eine fortlaufende schriftliche Beratungsdokumentation sowie eine Befragung von Kooperationspartnern zur Bewertung des Gesundheitslotsen als Schnittstelle innerhalb der lokalen Angebotsstruktur. Ergebnisse Die Literaturrecherche ergab keine Hinweise auf vergleichbare Konzepte. Die erstellte Anbieterdatenbank wurde als Instrument zu Beratungen sowie zur Bewertung der örtlichen Angebotsstruktur genutzt. Die Vorab-Befragung von Gesundheitsgästen ergab, dass diese v. a. Wert auf eine neutrale und objektive Beratung legen. Die Beratungsdokumentation zeigte, dass 53% der Gäste, die eine Beratung in Anspruch genommen haben, älter als 65 Jahre sind. Der Aufenthalt wurde mehrheitlich als privat finanzierter Urlaub, ambulante Vorsorgeleistung oder stationäre Rehabilitation umgesetzt. Fragen zu Institutionen mit medizinischer Infrastruktur standen in den Beratungen im Vordergrund. Das ursprüngliche Tätigkeitsfeld des Gesundheitslotsen wurde im Laufe der Implementierung in Richtung eines stärkeren Fokus auf die Einbindung in den Positionierungsprozess im Gesundheitstourismus modifiziert. Die befragten Projektpartner bewerteten diese Neupositionierung positiv. Schlussfolgerung Im Studienkontext konnte das Konzept erfolgreich umgesetzt werden. Die Neuausrichtung des Aufgabenprofils führte zu einer verbesserten strukturellen Verankerung des Gesundheitslotsen vor Ort. Durch die Erstellung eines Handlungsleitfadens soll die Dissemination des Konzepts gefördert werden.

Health spa tourism services are provided in special hospitals for medical rehabilitation and health resorts, and include controlled use of natural healing factors and physical therapy under medical supervision in order to improve and preserve health. Health tourism is a service industry and therefore labor-intensive industry in which human resources are one of the key factors of business success. The aim of this study was to analyze business performance of special hospitals for medical rehabilitation and health resorts in Croatia in relation to the structure of employees, specifically the number of physicians and total medical personnel, as well as the share of physicians and medical personnel in the total number of employees. The assumption was that those who employ more physicians and medical employees are more successful. The empirical research was conducted and the assumption was tested firstly by correlation analysis and afterwards by regression analysis. The total number of employees in the researched health resorts and special hospitals amounted to 2,863, of which the share of physicians specialists accounted for almost 7%, while the share of total medical staff was almost 53%. From the results of our research, it can be concluded that special hospitals for medical rehabilitation and health resorts, which employ more physicians and medical personnel, are achieving better financial business performance. Based on the results obtained, it is possible to provide guidance for further growth and development in the direction of basing the primary offer on medical-health offer, rather than on wellness offer, which is a strong trend in the world. These findings are important for planning the health and tourism policies in Croatia and similar countries.
