When Did I Lose Them? Using Process Mining to Study User Engagement in Interactive Digital Narratives

Abstract: This work aims at capitalizing advances in the field of Process Mining applied to the domain of Interactive Digital Narratives (IDN), towards the understanding of user engagement, particularly, spotting when and what happened when user engagement dropped. An online IDN system was adapted to implement an engagement sampling protocol, probing 74 users for Continuation Desire during runtime. The playtest dataset was coupled with the engagement self-reports and analyzed using Process Mining. We identified a subset… Show more

“…Hypermedia learning sessions were used in [67], applying PM to detect long-term effects of metacognitive prompting on SRL in a follow-up learning task without instructional support. Combining the Interactive Digital Narratives (IDN) approach under Prolific, a scientific crowdsourcing platform and PM, Estupiñán and Szilas [68] examined the understanding of user engagement, particularly, spotting when and what happened when user engagement dropped.…”

“…The potentials and challenges with emergent and interactive narratives are explored in other recent studies such as Ryan, Mateas, and Wardrip-Fruin (2015), Estupiñán and Szilas (2019) and Gjøl, Jørgensen, and Bruni (2019). These studies approach the analysis of different aspects of interactive or emergent narratives in a digital or game realm to understand user engagement, narrative potentials and challenges.…”
