When Arousal Influences Ad Evaluation and Valence Does Not (and Vice Versa)

Abstract: This research examines, across 2 studies, the interplay between the valence and arousal components of affective states and the affective tone of a target ad. In the first study, music was used to induce a pleasant or unpleasant mood, while controlling for arousal. Participants were subsequently exposed to an ad that either had a positive-affective tone or was ambiguous in its affective tone. As predicted, the valence of the affective state colored the evaluation of the ad in a mood-congruent direction, but thi… Show more

“…This valence based approach contends that the positive or negative balance of an emotional situation will guide attitudinal reactions and subsequent behavior. This approach has been widely applied when studying the role of emotions in a consumer context (Chaudhuri, 1998;Gorn et al, 2001;Philips and Baumgartner, 2002). Although the value of the valence based approach for studying emotional reactions in consumer contexts is beyond question, it may be limited.…”

“…Furthermore, incidental (unrelated to the object of judgment) emotional arousal is often misinterpreted as an integral (related to the object of judgment) affective response to a target resulting in more polarized evaluations of this target (Reviewed in Pham 2007). According to Gorn et al (2001) incidental arousal is misconstrued as an integral response to the target resulting in polarization because people ''feel strongly about'' the target. Now, decision confidence has long been a popular field of research (e.g.…”
