Wheelmap: the wheelchair accessibility crowdsourcing platform

Abstract: Crowdsourcing (geo-) information and participatory GIS are among the current hot topics in research and industry. Various projects are implementing participatory sensing concepts within their workflow in order to benefit from the power of volunteers, and improve their product quality and efficiency. Wheelmap is a crowdsourcing platform where volunteers contribute information about wheelchair-accessible places. This article presents information about the technical framework of Wheelmap, and information on how i… Show more

“…Target groups included people requiring enhanced accessibility; grassroots initiatives supporting people with disabilities; policy-makers, planners, and service providers with responsibility for the built environment; and the general public. Rather than setting up a new platform, the tools to be developed were pilot-tested on established platforms including Wheelmap (Mobasheri, Deister, and Dieterich 2017), OpenRouteService (The Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology 2018), and OpenStreetMap (OSM). Employing tools targeting local initiatives for supporting awareness raising and collective action was necessary.…”

“…does it have elevators to travel between floors?) and which is evaluated by a different set of tools (examples of which include Wheelmap [23] or Euan's Guide [47]). The aim is to broadly frame and capture the problem in question, so that we can fully justify our proposed approach towards the identification and measurement of barriers.…”

“…An example is the OpenStreetMap (OSM) project [12], which provides open geospatial data for routing and navigation. OSM is used for planning of urban public transportation networks [13], assessing the completeness of bicycle trails and designated lane features [14], as the base for testing advanced journey planning visualization [15], as well as in research on the availability of transportation for people with mobility restrictions [16,17]. Despite complaints about the quality of OSM data, there are studies about methods for improvement of the quality of data in OSM, also used in the European transportation [18], which provides an opportunity for extensive use of OSM in the future.…”
