We conducted a study to evaluate the interactive effect of NO and H2S on the cadmium (Cd) tolerance of wheat. Cadmium stress considerably reduced total dry weight, chlorophyll a and b content and ratio of Fv/Fm by 36.7, 48.6, 26.7 and 19.5%, respectively, but significantly enhanced the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA), endogenous H2S and NO, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes. Exogenously applied sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), donors of NO and H2S, respectively, enhanced total plant dry matter by 47.8 and 39.1%, chlorophyll a by 92.3 and 61.5%, chlorophyll b content by 29.1 and 27.2%, Fv/Fm ratio by 19.7 and 15.2%, respectively, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes, but lowered oxidative stress and proline content in Cd‐stressed wheat plants. NaHS and SNP also considerably limited both the uptake and translocation of Cd, thereby improving the levels of some key mineral nutrients in the plants. Enhanced levels of NO and H2S induced by NaHS were reversed by hypotuarine application, but they were substantially reduced almost to 50% by cPTIO (a NO scavenger) application. Hypotuarine was not effective, but cPTIO was highly effective in reducing the levels of NO and H2S produced by SNP in the roots of Cd‐stressed plants. The results showed that interactive effect of NO and H2S can considerably improve plant resistance against Cd toxicity by reducing oxidative stress and uptake of Cd in plants as well as by enhancing antioxidative defence system and uptake of some essential mineral nutrients.

[1] Many porous media in which we determine water content are aggregated and characterized by a dual-porosity pore network, composed of interaggregate pores and intra-aggregate pores. This paper reports sample-scale permittivity measurements made in four stable aggregate media with dual porosity. Results indicate two distinct dielectric responses depending on whether the aggregates are surrounded by water or air. We relate transitions in the permittivity response to the water retention characteristic (WRC), showing that after the interaggregate pores have drained, the slope of the water contentpermittivity relationship is significantly reduced (permittivity values ranging from 5 to 7). The hydraulic critical water content (q hc ) is defined as the point where all the interaggregate pores are air filled and all the intra-aggregate pores are water saturated and is determined from the WRC. The dielectric critical water content (q dc ) is defined as the point where a slope change in the measured water content-permittivity relationship occurs. A two-step model is presented and designed to capture the physical characteristics of the permittivity response to drainage. Measurements of q hc and q dc reveal a separation in these two values. The difference is considered to be a function of the connectivity of the intra-aggregate pore network. A connectivity ratio is defined as 1-(q dc /q hc ), where values close to 0 indicate low connectivity between the intra-aggregate pores and values tending to 1 indicate a high level of connectivity. Results from this work indicate that the reduced permittivity response measured in the water content-permittivity relationship is due to microstructure and phase configuration and not to ''bound'' water.

One component of a proposed life support system is the use of zeoponic substrates, which slowly release NH 4 + into "soil" solution, for the production of plants. Nitrifying bacteria that convert NH 4 + to NO 3 are among the important microbial components of these systems. Survival of nitrifying bacteria in dry zeoponic substrates is needed, because the substrate would likely be stored in an air-dry state between croppings. Substrate was enriched for nitrifying bacteria and allowed to air-dry in a laminar flow hood. Stored substrate was analyzed for nitrifier survivability by measuring nitrifier activity at the beginning, 3 days, 1, 2, and 3 weeks. After rewetting, activity was approximately 9 µg N g -1 h -1 regardless of storage time. Nitrification rates did not decrease during storage. It seems unlikely that drying between plantings would result in practical reductions in nitrification, and reinoculation with nitrifying bacteria would not be necessary.
