Wheat leaf rust.

Abstract: This chapter focuses on the economic importance, geographical distribution and physiological specialization of wheat leaf rust, caused by Puccinia recondita. Some examples of resistance screening methods are presented and the various sources of wheat leaf rust resistance genes and the morphological and biochemical bases of resistance are discussed. Some major advances in wheat leaf rust gene cloning are also pointed out.

“…WLR is wide spread and is managed through the application of fungicides and by deploying host resistance ( R ) genes in wheat cultivars. R genes confer resistance to one or more races (pathotypes) of rust and at present more than 60 such genes have been identified in wheat . WLR races are closely related and are defined by their ability to overcome R genes.…”

“…More than 60 genes for leaf rust resistance have been identified in common wheat (McCallum et al. ); but only a few of them have been detected in durum wheat such as Lr14a gene on chromosome 7B, which originated from the emmer wheat ‘Yaroslav’ and were then transferred to the hexaploid wheat (McFadden ). Lr23 was transferred to common wheat from durum wheat cv .…”

“…Coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix) is substantially damaging Coffee plantations worldwide (Talhinhas et al, 2017). Similarly, wheat leaf rusts like Puccinia triticina, Puccinia recondite, and Puccinia striiformis are causing serious production losses for one of the world's biggest food crops (McCallum, Hiebert, Huerta-Espino, & Cloutier, 2012).…”
